Available Ingredient
Ashwagandha

About Ashwagandha :

Ashwagandha means “the smell of a horse” in the Sanskrit language, referring to the sweat of the active horse. This indicates that the herb gives the vigor and the strength of a stallion. In Latin, the species name of ‘somnifera’ refers to the inducing of sleep. Ashwagandha is a short shrub which can grow up to 75 cms in height. The branches are ‘tomentose’, Latin for ‘cushion stuffing’, in that the plant hairs are flattened and matted. Branches extend radially from a central stem. The flowers of the Ashwagandha are small and yellow-green in colour and the ripened fruit is a bright orange-red. The plant is native to the drier Himalayan regions of India, Northern Africa and the Mediterranean.  Nowadays, it is also grown in regions with milder climate, including the U.S.A.

For more than 4000 years Ashwagandha has been used in Indian Ayurveda. In Ayurvedic medicine the herb is traditionally prescribed to help strengthen the immune system after an illness and is commonly known for alleviating stress. The entire plant, roots, berries and leaves, are all used in the preparation of Ayurvedic medicines, both internal and external. The internal medicinal properties are derived from the long, brown, aromatic tuberous root of the plant. The leaves and the berries are used as a topical application to improve a variety of skin conditions.

Benefits :

Listed below are some of the known health benefits of Ashwagandha:

  • Improves the immune system. It is especially recommended after an illness to enhance and rejuvenate immunity.

Botanical Name :

Withania somnifera

Common Name :

Ashwagandha, Winter cherry, Indian ginseng or poison gooseberry

Chemical Constituents :

Chemical constituents of Ashwagandha are Alkaloids, Withinalkaloids, Steroidal lactones, and the main alkaloid Withanine, are the main constituents of Ashwagandha. Other constituents include, but are not limited to, cholrogenic acid, scopoletin, amino acids, withaferin, and beta-sitosterol.

How it works in body? :

It is considered an Adaptogen- an agent that exerts biological effects that promotes biochemical balance in both the body and the  brain. In the brain, it changes the configuration of neuron receptors enabling GABA molecules to connect more easily. Thereby, it relieves the anxiety by inhibiting signals caused by mental stress. It helps in the regulation of important human hormones with its main constituents called Withaferin A and Withanolide D.It counteracts the activity of calcium which seems to be the contributing factor that causes many mood disorders. It regulates Cortisol levels in the body. Cortisol is a hormone produced during high levels of stress. Chronic stress results in excess cortisol being produced which causes a reduction of healthy hormones. Persistent stress and the excess cortisol also cause an increased level of cell damaging free radicals that can lead to aging prematurely. It enhances serotonin in the brain. The roots of the herb contain tryptophan, a serotonin precursor, which is a mood regulator.

Nutritional Facts :

Ashwagandha has high nutritional value, it is  a preventative health supplement. The alkaloids help in reducing cholesterol and in controlling blood sugar.

Serving Ideas :

Ashwagandha can be served in many ways, listed below are a few of them.

  • The berries can be used as a substitute for rennet in cheese making. Since rennet is a complex enzyme which is produced in the stomach of mammals, vegetarians benefit from the use of Ashwagandha in the cheese making process for vegetarians.
  • Tea may be made by boiling the roots for 15 minutes and consuming the brew up to 3 cups per day for a total of 750 ml.
